Newark, Del. - Drexel field hockey sealed third place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 4-1 victory over rival Delaware. The four goals were the most scored by the Dragons in a CAA game since Drexel joined the conference in 2002. The Dragons have scored 14 goals in the past four games, all Drexel victories. The win was Drexel's sixth in the last seven games as the Dragons improved to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The five conference wins ties the school record set in 2000 when the Dragons were 5-3 in the America East Conference. Delaware dropped to 10-8 and 3-4 in the CAA.
Delaware scored the game's first goal as the Blue Hens' Michelle Drummond notched her seventh goal of the season prompting Drexel Head Coach Denise Zelenak to call a timeout. The Dragons regrouped and immediately responded as Emily Horvat was fouled less than five minutes later and Drexel was awarded a penalty stroke. Carolina Gibernau converted her fourth stroke in four tries this season to tie the game, 1-1. The score remained knotted as the game went to halftime. Seven minutes into the second period, Drexel took the lead on a Horvat goal. The senior forward has now scored at least one goal in the past three games and has recorded at least one point in the last four games. Freshman Kim Tunell provided the Dragons with some insurance with her third goal of the season while senior midfielder Sarah Gostomski rocketed a shot into the cage off of a penalty corner to increase the Drexel lead to three goals. Horvat and Gibernau were credited with assists on Dragons' fourth goal of the game.
The Dragons outshot Delaware, 13-7, while both teams were awarded seven penalty corners each. Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew made five saves in the game and now has a 0.71 goals against average in conference games as the Dragons have allowed a total of just five goals in seven CAA games.
Drexel wraps up its season with a road game against Towson on Sunday, Oct. 28. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
